Tab Commerce

Discount items in pairs on Shopify: every 2 items get X% off

Tab Promo's Complete pairs setting gives a percentage off every complete pair of eligible items, so "any 2 for 20% off" keeps repeating at 4, 6 or 8 items. Pairs are counted across everything the rule covers, so shoppers can mix products, and the highest-priced items are paired first; with an odd count, the lowest-priced item stays at full price. It is an option on the Product percentage discount, and the rule must be set to "Use only the best matching rule".

Setup

How to set it up.

  1. Add a Product percentage discount. Click Create campaign and choose Blank campaign, or open an existing campaign. In the Rules card, click Add rule and choose Product percentage discount as the action.
  2. Keep Flat rate and choose Complete pairs. Leave the discount mode on Flat rate. Set Quantity application to "Complete pairs, highest-priced items first" and enter the percentage.
  3. Choose which items can pair up. Under Discount applies to, pick All products, Selected items or Exclude items, by Collections, Products or Variants. Every item the rule covers counts toward the same pairs.
  4. Set Combining rules. In the Combining rules card, set When other rules also match to Use only the best matching rule. The rule is rejected with any other setting.
  5. Preview odd counts, then publish. Run Preview on an order with an odd number of eligible items at different prices, set the rule to Active, then open Publish and click Publish now.

Good to know

Where it stops.

  • The group size is always two. "3 for X" or "buy 4, save more" offers need quantity tiers or Buy X Get Y instead.
  • Complete pairs only works on a Product percentage discount with a flat rate. It cannot be used with a fixed amount off, with quantity tiers, or with a Variants matching metafield scope.
  • Because the rule must use "Use only the best matching rule", it does not stack with other product discounts in the same campaign; only the one with the largest saving applies. Put other offers in a separate campaign and set Combinations.
  • Claimed free gift lines never count toward a pair at checkout.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is this the same as "second item half price"?

No. Here both items in each pair get the percentage. For half off only the cheaper item, use the Second item half price template, which is a Buy X Get Y offer.

What happens with an odd number of items?

Items are paired from the highest price down, so the single leftover item is the lowest-priced one and stays at full price.

Can shoppers mix different products in a pair?

Yes. All eligible items in the cart are counted together, so any two products the rule covers make a pair.

Can I discount items in groups of three?

Not with this setting; it only makes pairs. Use quantity tiers (for example 3+ items → 15% off each) or a Buy X Get Y offer instead.

Can shoppers see how many more items complete a pair?

Yes. With a Tab Promo app embed or product-page messaging on, the theme can show messages such as "Add 1 eligible item for the next pair". The price is decided at checkout.
