Minimum, maximum and multiple-of quantity rules on Shopify

Tab Promo lets you set minimum, maximum and multiple-of quantity rules, and Shopify blocks checkout with your own message until the cart meets them. You can count quantities per variant, per product, or across a whole group of products, so rules like "buy in cases of 6" or "limit 2 per customer order" take a few fields. A rule can live on its own or in the same campaign as a discount.

Shoppers get 20% off up to 10 bags; an 11th bag blocks checkout.

Setup

How to set it up.

  1. Start from "Purchase quantity requirements". Click Create campaign and pick Purchase quantity requirements. It creates a rule without any discount. To add a limit to an existing discount campaign, add a rule with the Minimum / maximum quantity action.
  2. Choose which products the rule covers. Set the product scope: all products, or include or exclude specific products, variants or collections.
  3. Set the limits and message. Choose how to count (per variant, per product, or all eligible items together), enter a minimum, maximum and/or multiple-of, and write the message shoppers see.
  4. Publish and test. Open Publish, resolve any errors, and publish. Then test a real cart: no eligible items, below the minimum, exactly at each limit, above the maximum, and a wrong multiple.

Good to know

Where it stops.

  • Rules apply to online checkout. They are not enforced on POS, orders created through the API, order edits or recurring subscription orders.
  • Quantity rules cannot be added to a discount-code campaign or an A/B test. Use an automatic or standalone campaign.
  • A cart with no eligible items passes the rule. It only checks carts that contain the covered products.

FAQ

Common questions.

Do I need a discount to use quantity rules?

No. The Purchase quantity requirements template creates a rule with no discount at all.

Can I limit quantity and give a discount in one campaign?

Yes. When you publish a campaign with both, Tab Promo turns on the quantity limit first, then the discount. When it's switched off, the discount goes first.

Does it work with discount codes?

Not inside the same campaign. Quantity rules cannot be part of a code-discount campaign; put them in an automatic or quantity-only campaign.

Do discounted items count toward the limit?

Yes. Discounted units still count. Exclude products from the scope if they should not count.

Do I need Shopify Plus?

No. Tab Promo's plans don't require Shopify Plus, and purchase rules are included on every plan, including Free.
