Tab Commerce

Returning-customer and first-order discounts on Shopify: what works

Tab Promo targets returning customers with the Order count, Customer spend (LTV) and Logged-in customer conditions, which read the customer's Shopify record at checkout. A rule like "Order count at least 1" reaches recognised customers with past orders, and guests never qualify because a guest checkout counts as 0 orders and $0 spend. For the same reason Tab Promo cannot promise a first-order-only discount: a returning shopper who checks out as a guest also looks like 0 orders, so the closest reliable rule is a logged-in customer with no orders on record.

Examples

Offers you can set up today.

Thank-you for coming back

Order count at least 1 → 10% off the order

A signed-in customer with 2 past orders gets 10% off. A guest pays full price, even if they have bought before.

Repeat-buyer code

Discount code REPEAT15, Order count at least 3 → 15% off

A customer with 4 orders gets 15% off with the code. A guest who enters it gets no discount.

Big spenders ship free

Customer spend (LTV) at least $500 → Free shipping

A customer who has spent $640 ships free; a guest never qualifies.

New account welcome

Logged-in customer is Logged in, Order count equals 0, Cart subtotal at least $50 → $10 off

A signed-in shopper with no orders on record gets $10 off a $64 cart. A guest does not, because the login check fails.

Setup

How to set it up.

  1. Create a campaign. Click Create campaign and choose Blank campaign. Pick Automatic discount, or Discount code if the offer should only apply when the shopper enters a code.
  2. Add the customer condition. In a new rule, add Order count or Customer spend (LTV) and pick a comparison: greater than, at least, less than, at most, equals or is not. Add Logged-in customer to require a signed-in account.
  3. Choose the reward. Pick the action: order or product discount, quantity tiers, Buy X Get Y, free gift or free shipping. Add a Cart subtotal condition if the offer needs a minimum.
  4. Test with a real customer checkout. Run Preview on a recent order from a returning customer, then place a test checkout on a development store as a signed-in customer and as a guest.
  5. Publish. Set the rule to Active, open Publish, resolve any errors, and click Publish now.

Good to know

Where it stops.

  • Guests count as 0 orders, $0 lifetime spend and no tags. "Order count equals 0" or "less than 1" therefore also matches every guest checkout, including returning shoppers who did not sign in.
  • Tab Promo has no first-order or new-customer condition and does not look up past orders by email.
  • Lifetime spend is entered in your store's currency; at checkout the customer's spend is converted with Shopify's rate before it is compared.
  • Preview treats any order linked to a customer as signed in and uses that customer’s order count today, which already includes the order you preview. Confirm with a real test checkout.

FAQ

Common questions.

Can I give a discount only on a customer’s first order?

Not reliably. A guest checkout counts as 0 orders, so a "0 orders" rule also rewards returning shoppers who check out as guests. Requiring Logged-in customer plus Order count equals 0 limits it to signed-in accounts with no orders on record.

How does Tab Promo know a customer is returning?

It reads the order count and lifetime spend on the customer's Shopify record at checkout. That needs Shopify to recognise the customer, usually because they are signed in.

Do guest checkouts ever get a returning-customer discount?

No. Conditions such as Order count at least 1 or Customer spend at least $100 never match a guest.

Can I exclude returning customers from an offer instead?

Yes, with Order count less than 1 or at most 0, but guests match too. Use it for offers that should reach new and guest shoppers alike.

Can I combine order count with customer tags?

Yes, in a Core segmentation campaign. Customer tag is not available in External data (metafield) campaigns; order count and lifetime spend work in both.
