Quantity tiers and discount combinations
Pool quantities across a product scope, discount complete pairs, exclude collections from an order discount, and distinguish rule-level selection from Shopify discount combinations.
A quantity tier controls a discount benefit. Its grouping decides which eligible quantities are counted together.
Choose the tier grouping
On a Product percentage discount or Product fixed-amount discount, set Discount mode to Quantity tiers, then choose Quantity counted by:
| Quantity counted by | Quantity counted together |
|---|---|
| Each variant separately | Each eligible variant on its own |
| Across variants of the same product | Eligible variants of the same product |
| Across all eligible items | All eligible lines admitted by the scope, except claimed gift lines |
A rule can have up to 10 tiers. Each tier needs a whole-number Min quantity higher than the tier before it, a discount, and an optional Checkout label. The highest tier reached applies to eligible lines only. An Amount off per unit is taken off each eligible unit, not once from the whole cart.
Use Discount applies to to define the pool: all products, selected or excluded collections, products, or variants, or, in External data campaigns, variants matching a metafield.
For a tier that begins at three units, two eligible units of one product plus one of another reach the tier when counted across all eligible items. The same cart does not reach it when each variant is counted separately.
A product page without the necessary cart context must not show a tier counted across all eligible items as an already-earned product price. Use the returned opportunity or ladder information.
Discount complete pairs
To discount items two at a time, open a Product percentage discount with Discount mode set to Flat rate, and set Quantity application to Complete pairs, highest-priced items first.
Every complete pair of eligible units gets the percentage. Units are paired starting from the highest unit price, so when the count is odd, the lowest-priced unit stays at full price. With three eligible items, two are discounted.
- The group size is always two.
- Set When other rules also match to Use only the best matching rule. The rule cannot be saved with any other setting.
- Complete pairs cannot be combined with quantity tiers or with a Variants matching metafield scope.
- Claimed gift lines never count toward a pair.
With the Official Theme Extension, shoppers see how many eligible items are discounted and how many more complete the next pair, for example “Add 1 eligible item for the next pair”.
Exclude collections from an order discount
Use a scoped spend rule when some collections, such as gift cards or items already on sale, should neither count toward a spend threshold nor receive the discount.
- Add a new rule to the campaign. Under Conditions, before choosing an action, select Set up scoped spend.
- In Collections excluded from threshold and discount, add at least one collection.
- Set the threshold amount in the Scoped line total condition, and the amount off in the Order fixed-amount discount action.
At checkout:
- Only lines outside the excluded collections count toward the threshold. Claimed gift lines never count.
- The fixed amount comes off those same lines only, and never exceeds their total.
- If Shopify cannot confirm whether a line belongs to an excluded collection, no discount applies.
The editor blocks saving while the threshold and the discount use different collections. To give them different items on purpose, select Edit threshold and discount separately. Then set the condition’s Scope mode to Except selected items and edit the action’s Discount applies to on its own. An order discount scope cannot use variant metafields, and in External data campaigns the threshold can only use collections.
Set the two combination layers
Inside one campaign, When other rules also match in the rule’s Combining rules card controls which matching rules apply:
- Apply with every matching rule: each matching rule takes part. At checkout, each cart line still gets at most one product discount from the campaign, the one with the larger saving. Only the campaign’s largest order discount applies.
- Use only the best matching rule: when any matching rule uses this setting, the campaign applies only the single product discount with the largest saving.
- Apply only with selected rules: the rule applies only alongside the rules you select. If a matching rule listed above it is not on the list, this rule is skipped.
The selected rules must be active rules in the same campaign, and a rule cannot select itself. While an active rule lists another rule, that rule cannot be disabled or archived until the reference is removed.
Between discounts, the campaign’s Combinations card controls whether its discount can combine with other order, product, or shipping discounts. A permissive rule setting does not override Shopify’s campaign-level policy.
Verify the result
- From the campaign’s More actions, run Preview against an order that crosses a tier or threshold, and one that does not.
- Include items both inside and outside the scope, including an excluded collection for a scoped spend rule.
- For complete pairs, test an odd number of eligible items and items with different prices.
- Inspect the winning tier and discounted lines.
- Use Stack Simulator to inspect interactions with the other campaigns you intend to run.
- Publish and confirm the actual cart and checkout result.
For checkout-blocking limits, use Purchase quantity rules. Their counting rules include in-scope gifts, unlike tiers counted across all eligible items.
