Tab Commerce

Discounts based on customer, product and variant metafields

Tab Promo can use customer, product and variant metafields as discount conditions on the Pro plan, compared with equals, not equals, greater than or less than. That lets data your other apps already write, such as a loyalty tier, review score or season tag, decide who gets an offer and which items it covers. Each campaign can read one customer, one product and one variant metafield.

Top-rated product in cart

Cart contains a product whose reviews.rating is 4.5 or higher → free gift

Adding any product rated 4.7 unlocks the gift.

Setup

How to set it up.

  1. Check the metafield in Shopify. In Shopify admin, open Settings → Custom data and confirm the metafield (for example loyalty.tier) exists with a simple type: text, number or true/false. Make sure a test record has a value.
  2. Create a campaign that reads metafields. Pick the VIP exclusive discount template, or start blank and set Runtime profile to External data. This profile is what unlocks metafield conditions, and it is locked once rules are added.
  3. Add the metafield condition. Add Customer metafield, Customer tier metafield, Product metafield or Variant metafield. Enter the namespace and key exactly as defined, pick an operator, and enter the value. To discount only matching variants, set the product scope to "Variants matching metafield".
  4. Test with real data. Test with a customer and products that carry the values you expect. For customer metafields, place a test checkout on a development store before launch.
  5. Publish. Open Publish, check the slot usage and any errors, then click Publish now.

Good to know

Where it stops.

  • Each campaign can read one customer metafield, one product metafield and one variant metafield. Use separate campaigns for more.
  • Metafield campaigns cannot use customer-tag or "Contains product" conditions, or free shipping. Those need a standard campaign.
  • Values must be a single text, number or true/false value. List metafields and JSON objects cannot be used as conditions.
  • A product metafield condition checks whether the cart contains a matching product; it does not pick which items get discounted. Use a variant metafield scope for that.

FAQ

Common questions.

Which plan do I need?

Pro ($99/month). Free and Starter can draft and preview metafield campaigns, but publishing them needs Pro.

What happens if a customer has no value in the metafield?

A missing value is treated as missing, not as zero or empty text, so the condition does not match. Guests have no customer metafields.

Which comparisons can I use?

Equals, not equals, greater than, greater than or equal, less than, and less than or equal. The Customer tier metafield condition also matches a list of values, such as Gold or Platinum.

Is Tab Promo the only app that can do this?

No. Shopify's customer segments and other discount apps can also use customer data. Tab Promo lets product, variant and customer metafields sit in the same rule as tiers, BOGO or gifts.

Does reading metafields slow down checkout?

Shopify reads the metafield values inside checkout and passes them to the discount logic. Tab Promo's servers are not called at checkout.
