Track the orders your promoters bring in
Give each promoter their own link to a campaign, then see how many orders and how much in sales each of them brings in.
Share links answer one question: who brought in which orders? Give each person or channel that promotes your store their own link, and Tab Promo counts the orders placed through it.
How it works
- Add a promoter. A promoter is anyone who shares your store. Pick a type: Employee, Store, Influencer, Channel, or Other. You add each promoter once and reuse them. Use Add promoter on the Promoters tab, or choose Add a new promoter while creating a link. Promoter names must be unique.
- Create their link. Click Create link, then pick a Campaign, a Promoter, and a Landing page. Tab Promo creates one link for that pair. If the campaign uses a discount code, the link applies the code for the shopper automatically.
- Share it. Click Copy link on the Links tab and send it to the promoter.
- See the results. Orders placed after a shopper opens the link count toward that promoter.
You can create links for campaigns that give an automatic discount or a discount code. Purchase-requirements-only campaigns and archived campaigns can’t have share links.
One promoter can have links for several campaigns. The Promoters tab adds up everything a promoter brought in across all of their links. The Overview tab shows orders, sales, refunds, cancellations and net sales for the selected dates, compared with the prior period, plus daily sales and the top promoters, links and campaigns. The Share links card on each campaign page shows how many links that campaign has.
What counts as an order from a link
- Every order through the link counts, even when the shopper didn’t use the campaign’s offer. A shopper who arrives through Wang’s link and buys $200 without reaching the offer’s minimum still counts as $200 in sales for Wang. The campaign’s own reports are separate and would show that the offer wasn’t used.
- The last link opened wins. If a shopper opens two different links before buying, the order counts toward the link opened last.
- Links can be forwarded. Anyone who opens a promoter’s link counts toward that promoter, so treat the numbers as a guide rather than proof of who personally made the sale.
- Refunds are taken out. Net sales after refunds subtracts refunds and unrefunded cancellations from the sales total.
- Each currency is reported on its own. Amounts in different currencies are never added together.
- Days follow UTC. The date range and daily totals use UTC days, so an order placed late in the evening in your time zone can fall on the next day.
A share link never changes who qualifies for an offer or how much discount a shopper gets.
Before you share links
On the Storefront page in Tab Promo, turn on site-wide messaging (the Tab Promo app embed in your online store theme). Orders are counted only while it is on. The Share links page shows Turn on Tab Promo in your theme when it is off.
If your store uses a custom theme built by a developer, see For developers below.
Manage links and promoters
- Links that aren’t ready yet. Links for automatic-discount campaigns are ready right away. For a discount-code campaign, the link is ready once the campaign is published and its code is live. Until then, the Links tab shows Not ready yet.
- Link status. The Links tab shows Active, Disabled, Campaign unavailable (the campaign isn’t live right now, for example it isn’t published, is deactivated, or is outside its active dates), or Code changed.
- Code changed. If you change a campaign’s discount code, links you already shared still carry the old code. Copy the link again, send it to the promoter, then choose I’ve shared the new code from the link’s menu.
- A link reached the wrong people? Delete it, then create a new link for the same promoter and campaign. The old link stops counting new orders, and the orders it already brought in stay in your reports.
- Turn off or delete. Choose Disable from a link’s or promoter’s menu to stop counting new orders. Disabling a promoter disables all of their links. Enable turns a link or promoter back on; enabling a promoter does not re-enable their links, so enable each link you still want. Deleting cannot be undone. Past orders always stay in your reports.
- Landing page. Each link opens the page you choose, such as
/collections/all. It must be a path on your store that starts with/; full URLs aren’t accepted. Change it with Edit in the link’s menu.
Export
Download CSV on the Share links page exports sales per link for the selected date range and the filters on the Links tab.
For developers
This section is for teams building or maintaining a custom theme.
- A share link carries a
tp_sourcequery parameter. For a discount-code campaign, the URL goes through Shopify’s/discount/{code}path first and keepstp_sourceand the landing page’s own query parameters. - The token must be saved to the Shopify cart before checkout, as the cart
attribute
tab_promo_attribution_source. The official theme app embed does this and then removestp_sourcefrom the address bar. An order is attributed only after Shopify confirms the token in the cart; reading the query parameter alone is not enough, and typing a discount code without the link does not identify a promoter. - A custom theme without the app embed saves the token with the Storefront
SDK’s
captureAttributionSourcemethod, available from version 1.0.0. It resolves only after Shopify confirms the token in the cart. See Capture share-link tokens, and don’t recreate the cart protocol yourself. - Unknown, malformed or retired tokens leave the order unattributed. Do not use browser storage as the source of truth for attribution, and keep link tokens separate from A/B test assignment and promotion evaluation.
